Position Summary

If you are looking to expand on your experience in Compositing through an intensive, hands-on program then ILM’s Jedi Academy may be just what you’re looking for!

 

This program is designed to give you the experience you need to succeed in a fast paced VFX studio  and runs over the course of several weeks. You will have access to some of the industry's best Compositors that will guide you through mentorship, training tasks, and simulated production exercises within a fast-paced environment.

This is a paid program and graduates who successfully complete the program may be considered for a Junior Artist position within the studio.  

We are looking for great artists who reflect the creative talent and passion for great filmmaking that defines ILM.

Your role?

  • Evaluating the creative and technical approach for assigned training shots.

  • Performing all tasks associated with the compositing process, including 2D tracking, matte extraction, layering of elements, and color grading on moderately complex shots.

  • Maintaining the overall look, color balance, and quality of assigned training shots.

  • Demonstrating an understanding of the basics of proper integration.

  • Supplementing scenes with 2D elements as required.

  • Applying knowledge of cinematography principles.

  • Having experience in, or an understanding of, a production environment.

  • Strengthening professional habits, including best practices for presenting work in dailies, teamwork, and effective communication.

  • Receives and applies creative feedback in a constructive way.
     

Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of keying techniques.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Technical problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and fix issues effectively.

  • Maintains a positive attitude, with patience and persistence.

  • Open to change and eager to learn new skills.

  • Demonstrates professionalism and takes initiative to solve problems.

What We’re Looking For

To be eligible, applicants must have relevant Comp/VFX experience or currently working in a production environment. 

  • Proficiency in Nuke.

  • Ideally, a strong foundation in fine arts, such as photography and photographic lighting, with a keen eye for composition, color, and design.

  • Comfortable working in Linux-based environments.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Solid time management skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritize in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Enjoys problem-solving and creative thinking.

  • A proven track record demonstrated through a showreel showcasing compositing skills.

  • Passionate about film, visual effects production, and related technologies.

Nice to Have:

  • Ability to write Nuke gizmos and/or plugins.

  • Experience with Python and/or C++.

Please note: Applications will close Friday 20th of June 2025.

  • Duration of program: 8 weeks

  • This program will be delivered onsite and in person, 5 days per week - start time & finish times TBC - at the Sydney Studio.

  • Relocation is not offered & candidates must reside in NSW from the commencement of the course.

  • All applicants must be Australian Citizens or have PR.
